The importance of insulating your doghouse depends on whether or
not the location has extreme temperatures. The dog breed can also
dictate how well-suited they are for outdoor living therefore, affect
the importance of having your dog's house insulated.
The typical extreme weather for summer and winter months for that area
determines the importance of insulating your dog's house. In regions of
the world where there are extremely cold temperatures in winter or
extremely high temperatures in summer, and insulated doghouse may not
be enough protection for the dog.
A dog owner can purchase a premade, insulated doghouse. If the dog
owner makes the doghouse, the dog owner can add insulation to the
walls, roof, and the floor of the doghouse.
There different types of insulation that are commonly used for
doghouses. Some doghouses may have insulation panels along the interior
of the doghouse. Some insulated doghouses have Styrofoam sheets or
polystyrene foam between the exterior and interior walls of the
doghouse.
The insulation helps the doghouse from becoming too hot or too cold.
The insulation blocks some of the heat in summer. The insulation holds
in the dog's body temperature which helps keep the inside of the
doghouse warmer during the winter.
When shopping for insulated doghouse, the dog owner should check that
the doghouse walls, floor, and roof are all insulated. The dog owner
should ask what type of insulating material the doghouse contains.
If a dog has not been kept outdoors, the dog may have difficulty
adjusting to any temperature extremes. If a dog is to be kept outdoors
at certain times, the dog should be kept outdoors for short periods of
time from the time it is a puppy.
Some dog breeds are better suited for a living outdoors. Dog breeds
with heavy coats that originate in areas with cold temperatures may
have it easier time dealing with winter months, but extremely hot
weather could be dangerous for them.
An insulated doghouse used in the winter needs to be the appropriate
size for the dog. The insulated doghouse is heated by the dog's body
temperature, therefore if the doghouse is too large, the space cannot
be heated sufficiently by the dog's body temperature.
At times, insulation is not enough to protect the dog. Doghouse
accessories like heating pads and small air-conditioning units may be
necessary.
Keeping a dog outdoors all the time can be detrimental to the dog for
more reasons than extreme temperatures. Dogs require proper
socialization or they can become aggressive.
